South Australian Museum

A giant blue whale, ancient fossils and thousands of Aboriginal objects are among the stories told at the South Australian Museum in Adelaide. Founded in 1856, the museum explores natural history and human cultures, with collections covering everything from dinosaurs and minerals to Australian wildlife and Pacific cultures. Its Australian Aboriginal collections are particularly significant, documenting tens of thousands of years of culture and history. Elsewhere, visitors can encounter Megafauna fossils, Egyptian artefacts, meteorites and taxidermied animals. The museum also houses the Australian Polar Collection, connecting its collections to Australia’s long history of Antarctic exploration.
