Ruined prison buildings, silent cells and a harbour surrounded by forest make Port Arthur feel less like a museum and more like a place where history never quite left. The site was one of Australia’s most important penal settlements, operating from 1830 until 1877 and holding thousands of convicts. Today, more than 30 historic buildings, ruins and restored homes form an open-air collection on the Tasman Peninsula. Objects, documents and archaeological remains reveal the lives of convicts, guards and settlers, while guided tours and the preserved landscape explore the harsh realities of the penal system. Port Arthur is part of the UNESCO Australian Convict Sites.
