From a rare giant squid to Māori treasures and creatures from across the natural world, Tūhura Otago Museum brings together science, culture and natural history in the heart of Dunedin. Founded in 1868, it holds more than 1.5 million objects and specimens connected to Otago, New Zealand and beyond. The galleries range from Māori and Pacific collections to fossils, minerals, insects and preserved animals. The Tropical Forest lets visitors walk among hundreds of free-flying butterflies, while the museum’s science centre turns physics, biology and technology into hands-on experiences. Together, the collections reveal both the region’s past and the wider natural world.
