On the island of Föhr, Museum Kunst der Westküste explores the enduring relationship between art, the sea and coastal life. Opened in 2009 in Alkersum, the museum was founded around a collection focusing on the North Sea coasts of Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands between 1830 and 1930. The collection includes paintings by artists such as Edvard Munch, Max Liebermann, Emil Nolde and Peder Severin Krøyer, alongside photography and contemporary art. Rather than maintaining a permanent display, the museum presents its collection through changing thematic exhibitions, often placing historical works alongside contemporary perspectives on the coast.
