Set inside a former 17th-century Benedictine abbey on Place des Terreaux, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon brings 5,000 years of art history together beneath one roof. Its collections range from ancient Egyptian artefacts and Greek sculpture to European paintings, decorative arts and modern works. Highlights include paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Delacroix and Picasso, alongside an extensive collection of coins, medals and sculptures. Beyond the galleries, the former abbey cloister has become a peaceful sculpture garden, offering a quiet retreat in the centre of Lyon. The museum’s mix of historic architecture and art from across cultures makes it one of France’s major fine arts collections outside Paris.
