A giant red sculpture, a surrealist painting or an experimental photograph can all find a place at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, one of Sweden’s leading museums for modern and contemporary art. Opened in 1958 on the island of Skeppsholmen, the museum helped bring international modernism into the heart of Swedish cultural life. Its collection spans the 20th and 21st centuries, with works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol and Niki de Saint Phalle alongside Swedish and Nordic artists. Painting, sculpture, photography, film and installations sit side by side, reflecting the museum’s long-standing interest in art that challenges conventions. The current building, designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo and opened in 1998, combines the historic museum site with modern gallery space
