A collection that began with a 16th-century cabinet of curiosities grew into one of the world’s most important public art collections. Kunstmuseum Basel traces its history to 1661, when the city acquired the Amerbach Cabinet, making its collection one of the earliest public art collections in Europe. Today, more than 300,000 works span eight centuries, from medieval painting to contemporary art. The museum is particularly known for its works by Hans Holbein the Younger, alongside masterpieces by Konrad Witz, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso and other major artists. Its three venues, the Hauptbau, Neubau and Gegenwart, bring together Old Masters, modern art and contemporary works across the city.
