Goulandris Museum

A former neoclassical house in central Athens hides a collection built around one couple’s passion for modern art. The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation opened its museum in 2019, bringing works collected by the Greek art patrons together in a setting that feels closer to a private home than a conventional gallery. Picasso, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Bacon appear alongside major Greek artists, creating unexpected conversations between Greek and international modernism. The collection spans painting, sculpture and works on paper, with the museum’s intimate scale allowing individual works to take centre stage.
