HólmavíkStrandabyggð/Iceland
In Iceland’s remote Westfjords, the history of witchcraft includes stories of magical symbols, attempts to summon the dead and a legendary pair of trousers made from human skin. Galdrasýning á Ströndum, also known as the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft, opened in Hólmavík in 2000 to explore Icelandic folklore and the witchcraft cases of the 17th century. Exhibits introduce the people accused of sorcery, the punishments they faced and the magical practices described in Icelandic tradition. Visitors can learn about grimoires, magical staves and *nábrók*, the so-called necropants believed in folklore to bring their wearer money. A second exhibition at the nearby Sorcerer’s Cottage explores life and magical beliefs in rural Iceland.
