Would you eat cheese filled with live larvae, fermented shark or Sweden’s famously pungent surströmming? At the Disgusting Food Museum in Malmö, around 80 unusual foods from around the world challenge visitors to reconsider what counts as edible. Opened in 2018, the museum explores how disgust is shaped by culture, tradition and personal experience. Exhibits feature foods that may seem revolting to outsiders but are considered delicacies in their home countries. Visitors can explore the stories behind these dishes, discover how some dangerous foods are made safe to eat and, for the adventurous, smell or taste selected samples. The museum asks a bigger question too: could changing our ideas about food help shape more sustainable diets?
