The Château de Malmaison in Rueil-Malmaison, France, was the residence of Joséphine Bonaparte and Napoleon Bonaparte during the Consulate. Purchased by Joséphine in 1799, the château became one of the centres of French government between 1800 and 1802. After their divorce, Joséphine continued to live there until her death in 1814. Today, the château is a museum dedicated to the Napoleonic era, with original furniture, paintings and decorative arts that reflect the tastes and daily lives of its former residents. Visitors can explore the richly furnished state rooms, Joséphine’s private apartments and the gardens she developed with a passion for rare plants and roses. The estate preserves the intimate atmosphere of a country residence that once stood at the heart of French political life.
