Bergbaumuseum Fohnsdorf in Styria preserves the history of more than 300 years of coal mining in the Fohnsdorf region. Mining began here around 1670 and continued until the closure of the mine in 1978, leaving a lasting mark on the local community and industrial history. The museum is located on the former mining site and features historical mining equipment, models, photographs, minerals and fossils. Highlights include the 47-metre winding tower, a 3,600-horsepower twin-tandem steam winding engine and an underground show mine that gives visitors an impression of working conditions below ground.
